Why we Celebrate Makar Sankranti?
Makar is Hindu Zodiac sign and Sankranti means to change direction. As per Hindu calendar Makar Sankranti day comes when sun actually changes it’s direction northwards from Dhanu Rashi to enter the Makar Rashi. Makar Sankranti is very auspicious day and it is a mark of day to start harvesting season and end of winter season.
Makar Sankranti – Different States & Different Styles of Celebration
Gujarat – In Gujarat Makar Sankranti known as Uttrayan. On this amazing day people fly kites on their terres and eats Undhiyu and Jalebi. They celebrate this festival for 2 days straight. Second day of Uttarayan called as Vasi Uttarayan.
Maharashtra – People in Maharashtra also celebrates this festival with joy and love. Here people exchange Til-gud, Halwa and Puran Poli. They use this phrase during the festival “til-gul ghya, aani god-god bola”, which means “Have tilgud and say sweet words”. In Maharashtra people celebrate this festival for 3 days in which first day called as Bhogi, second day as Sankrant and third day as Kinkrant.
On same day in Punjab people celebrate Lohri, In Tamil Nadu they celebrate Pongal. Kumbh Mela in Prayag Raj is also highlight of this festival. Thousands of devotees visits Kumbh Mela and enjoys the festive season.
